We always like to continue to bring you great new features here on Bell Ringing Web, and we’d now like to launch our first new service of 2011 – From You!

If you’ve got something you’d like to tell fellow bell ringers about, then please get in touch. Perhaps a report from a ringing outing or another article that would be of interest to ringers. Photos and even videos are very welcome too!

We have two really easy ways you can submit an article. Firstly, just click on the ‘Submit‘ link now at the top of our pages, and then either email us your story, with your photos or videos attached, or fill in the easy, secure form on the page.

We’ll aim to get back to you as soon as possible and get your story online quickly!

We really hope you’ll take advantage of this new feature, which we think will be great to bring more fresh content to everyone. If you’ve got something of interest to other ringers, why not send it in today?!

PS – If you’d perhaps like to express yourself more, why not consider getting yourself a blog on the new BellRinging.org Network, which offers a managed, really easy-to-use home for every bell ringing site.

Bell Ringing Web only started back in May, launching on Twitter initially with our simple service to...

Bell Ringing Web only started back in May, launching on Twitter initially with our simple service to collate bell ringing news and updates from around the web.

Our aim was collect everything we could and centralise it to a single, automatic source. We had to do alot of work in exploring everything we could find out there, from general news sources, to photos, videos and blogs. Where content was available to export we took existing arrangements, although for many, we had to set up a range of monitoring solutions to track for updates.

As our project developed, we created our main website as well as creating a range of other sites and methods through which you can keep up to date. Eventually, we took the decision to rebuild the whole system. Our Twitter based system was repeatedly failing, was slow and was far too restrictive. Our website here allows for much greater power in how we gather, organise and process the inputs we have.

We’ve also had a few redesigns on Bell Ringing Web, every one to make the site easier for you to use, and to make our content key, with a focus on how best to organise and layout the site to let you know where to go to find what you’re after.

As we enter a new year, we thought we’d highlight some of the most popular content from 2010.

Apps for Bell Ringing
One of the largest additions to our content this year has been bell ringing Apps for iPod, iPhone and iPad. We’ve featured all the new apps as they’ve been released and we plan to continue through 2011.

On This Day in Bell Ringing
The daily updates of achievements and ringing events from history continues to be very popular.

Theft At Nicholson’s
The event of the theft of a number of bells from Nicholson’s Engineering works was a sad note in 2010, and was our most viewed single post on BRW.

Suffolk Guild Ringing Master’s Blog
This was a very popular item on BRW in 2010, which sadly, we had to retire part way through the year as it proved difficult for us to always provide accurate and up-to-date content.

Bells on Sunday
Another popular weekly feature, providing links to BBC iPlayer which we look forward to continuing next year.

Mobel – New Ringing Simulator App
At the end of October, the Mobel App was launched on the App Store – ringing simulator software from the makers of the always popular Abel.

Little Paxton Need Your Vote!
The bell restoration appeal at Little Paxton used a TV voting contest to win their funding.

In 2010 we’ve had almost 1,300 updates published, well over 10,000 page views at BellRinging.org/BRW and 140 followers on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

We’ve had some great content over 2010, and we’d like to thank all the source websites we link out to. We look forward to continuing and growing in 2011!

Bell Ringing from Chelsea Old Church, London was featured on You and Yours on Radio 4 today, as they ring to commemorate the anniversary of the programme.

Its a very good feature, with some great interviews with some young ringers who are really enthusiastic. It presents bell ringing in a very good light, as well as tackling myths such as the necessity to be a Church-goer, musical ability and strength. The fun social aspect is also well emphasised, as well as being able to travel around the country and meet many new people.

The programme is available to listen again on BBC iPlayer.

Earlier this week we encouraged you all to vote for Little Paxton’s Bell Appeal, and following the count they have won the £50 000 grant funding prize. We’d all like to send our congratulations and wish them the best of luck with the project!

Villager, Peter Hagger says…

A very big thank you to everybody who voted yesterday (Wednesday 24th November) for Little Paxton Has Bell Appeal. I am delighted to tell you that we won last night’s vote in the Anglia TV region and today received a cheque for £50,000. This will mean work on our bells and clock can start very early in 2011.

Thank you for your support and please pass on our thanks to anyone else you asked to vote for us.

We will keep you informed of progress on the project via our web site.

Call 0871 626 88 05 now to vote for the Little Paxton Bell Restoration Appeal!

Remember, you can vote up to 10 times from each telephone number, with calls costing 10p using BT. Lines close at midnight tonight.

——-

We have been contacted by the villagers of Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire, about their Bell Restoration Appeal which has made it to the finals of the People’s Millions competition.

They need everyone’s help to win the money in a public vote taking place right now – and closing at midnight!

If you’re from the local area, this is a great chance to get a new ring, but even if not its a get opportunity to help out another tower and some great publicity for bell ringing – especially if it wins!

Peter Hagger, from the village, has sent this message…

Dear Bell Ringers, Our Church of St James’ in Little Paxton has a major project which is trying to get our bells ringing again.

Our bells have not been rung regularly for about 100 years and one of the bells was made in St Neot’s (just 2 miles from Little Paxton) in 1791 by John Taylor, who’ll also be doing the work if we receive the grant. The clock is unique and is also thought to have been made at John Taylor’s works in St Neot’s.

At present the bells are hung in an ancient wooden bell frame thought to be from about 1700 and as part of the project will be preserved, but a new steel frame will be constructed to take the existing four bells plus a further two second hand bells. A small twenty four inch bell will be hung in the old frame to be used for when the clock chimes. The clock face was restored as the Village Millennium Project and it is fitting that the movement is now restored.

Anybody in the UK can vote up to 10 times from each telephone, calls from BT landlines cost just 10p (mobile and other operators charges may vary). If voting from a company it is likely that you will only be able to make 10 calls from the company. For more information, please visit our project page and you can leave messages of support their and connect to Twitter and Facebook etc.

Thank you
